Warts are benign skin growths caused by infection of the virus human papilloma virus or HPV. Warts are passed from person to person and can occur almost anywhere on the body. Warts on the soles of the feet are often called plantar warts. Other common warts often appear on the fingers, knees or elbows. Flat warts are usually over the legs or places individuals shave frequently such as the beard. Genital warts are sexually transmitted.

The gold standard of treatment for warts is liquid nitrogen application; however, warts may be treated with topical medication, destruction by burning, excision, injection of chemotherapy agents or laser surgery.
